BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES

PROCLAMATION NO. 58

DECLARING THE FIRST MONDAY OF DECEMBER OF EVERY YEAR AS “MOTHER’S DAY” AND “FATHER’S DAY”

WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines declares that “Marriage, as an inviolable social institution, is the foundation of the family and shall be protected by the State”;

WHEREAS, the wholesome growth and normal activities of the family are in the hands of the parents, the wise exercise of whose authority is essential to the fulfillment of the natural and proper ends of the family;

WHEREAS, it is only fitting and proper to dedicate certain days of the year to confer tribute to the important role of the Filipino mothers and fathers in instilling and fostering love, respect, discipline, industry and enterprise within their home and the community where they belong, and to further manifest the ideals and virtues of good parenthood.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH EJERCITO ESTRADA, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare the first Monday of December of every year as “Mother’s Day” and “Father’s Day.”

This supersedes Proclamation No. 266 dated June 8, 1988.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.

Done in the City of Manila, this 11th day of December, in the year of Our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Ninety Eight.
