Departure Statement of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo:
On her visit to Japan and Brazil

[Issued on June 17, 2009]

I will leave for Japan today to continue to intensify our robust and vibrant partnership with Japan, and to sustain the momentum resulting from the historic entry into force and implementation of the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA) last December.

Japan is the Philippines’ biggest source of official development assistance (ODA), the top export market for Philippine goods and products, the second top trading partner, and one of the major sources of investment and tourist arrivals.

In Tokyo, I will have an audience with Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan. I will also have a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Taro Aso and other top officials of the Japanese Government to discuss the state of our bilateral relations. I will also meet with Japanese businessmen and investors to invite them to take advantage of the many trade and investment opportunities in the Philippines. I also look forward to meeting the Filipino community in Japan, including some of our medical workers who have started their intensive training in Japan under JPEPA.

From Tokyo, I will go on a State Visit to Brazil upon the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. As the first Philippine President to visit Brazil, I have high hopes that my visit will provide the impetus for enhanced relations with Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America and an emerging major global player.

In Brasilia, I will meet with President Lula to discuss ways and means to enhance our bilateral cooperation and people-to-people linkages. We will also witness the signing of official agreements in the fields of agriculture and bio-energy, as well as an agreement to develop stronger and better linkages between Philippine and Brazilian business communities.

I am very optimistic that my visit to Japan and Brazil will mark another milestone in our quest to further deepen and widen our cooperation with two of the world’s economic powerhouses.
