RESOLUTION INSTITUTING A CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF ACHIEVEMENT TO ENABLE THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO HONOR POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL LEADERS WHO HAVE DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES THROUGH THEIR LIFE-WORK AND THEIR VISION
WHEREAS, this new century presents usually difficult challenges to nations and their leaders—pitting peoples of different religions and cultures, stoking centuries-old ethnic hatred and tensions—complicating efforts to unify their peoples, develop their economies and live in peace with their neighbors;
WHEREAS, foiling the threat of international terrorism, defeating mass poverty, preserving human rights and civil liberties, doing justice to every man, establishing a sense of community among nations and adding to mankind’s heritage of culture require the ability to dream great dreams, and then to match vision with action;
WHEREAS, such great leadership, wherever and whenevver it appears, deerves honor and recognition, so that it may serve as a model and inspiration to others in the same field of endeavor and especially to the young: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, as it is hereby resolved by the House of Representatives, To institute a Congressional Medal of Achievement to enable the House of Representatives to honor political, economic and cultural leaders who have distinguished themselves through their life-work and vision.
Resolved, further, To authorize the Speaker of the House of Representatives to present the Congressional Medal of Achievement to such persons.
Resolved, finally, To approve the attached design and illustration of the Congressional Medal of Achievement.
