The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announced today the release of P1 billion allotment to the Department of Energy (DOE) to cover the implementation of various projects on energy resource development. These projects include, among others, the Nationwide Intensification of Household Electrification (NIHE) and Household Electrification Program in Off-Grid Areas Using Renewable Energy Systems (HEP).

The amount of P1,041,966,000 is categorized under the For Later Release list of the 2016 DOE budget, which is subject to compliance of required documents and clearances, such as Work and Financial Plan and project profiles.

This release will support the goal of 90% household electrification by 2017 and energization of millions of households not connected to the grid through solar power.

“About P65 in every P100 of the 2016 budget is allocated for social and economic services, among these services are important community amenities, such as power for lighting and appliances in rural areas. Because the government has improved the way public funds are collected, allocated, spent, and accounted for, we are able to ensure that the budget directly benefits individual citizens,” said Secretary of Budget and Management Florencio Abad.

NIHE supports the detailed household electrification program of DOE in partnership with electric cooperatives. Under this program, the DOE targets to provide power to at least 45,000 households for 2015-2017 to reach its 90% household electrification aims by 2017.

HEP supports the energization of off-grid households using renewable energy technologies. These technologies include solar-powered home systems that can supply power for lighting and appliances to remote off-grid households in rural areas. DOE plans to bring electricity to over 4.5 million households not connected to the grid using renewable energy technology, thus raising to 88.4 percent the number of households with access to power.
