Manila youth encouraged to work in agriculture

The Rice Science Museum organized a youth camp that immersed participants in various activities and lectures on rice, culture, and history. Career opportunities in agriculture were also presented in order to promote agriculture as a viable and necessary profession.


President Aquino proclaims 2013 as National Year of Rice

Aquino III has declared 2013 as National Year of Rice or NYR and directed the Department of Agriculture (DA) to lead its celebration, as per Proclamation No. 494, signed on October 18, 2012 The NYR proclamation aims to intensify efforts of the Aquino government through the DA to attain rice self-sufficiency by 2013.

Research to cut vitamin A deficiency wins award

A November 10, 2011 press release from the Department of Agriculture, Philippine Rice Research Institute: The research of the PhilRice on Golden Rice, a type of rice that could help reduce vitamin A deficiency in the country, wins the Agriculture and Fishery Modernization Act Best R&D Paper (Gold Award) in the basic research category during the 23rd National Research Symposium organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Bureau of Agricultural Research. The research, Marker-Aided Transfer of Beta-Carotene Biosynthetic Genes (Golden Rice I) into two Philippine Rice Varieties, showed that trait of Golden Rice could be transferred to PSB Rc82 and NSIC Rc128 in lesser time and with minimal resources through the use of DNA markers in combination with traditional breeding. Golden Rice accumulates beta carotene, a source of vitamin A, in the grains.
